US Diplomat Scheduled to Meet Zelenskyy, EU Leaders in Berlin

Amid a key political effort, Donald Trump’s special envoy is slated to meet with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders in Berlin over the coming days, as Washington seeks a definitive plan to end the current war.

Peace Discussions and Truce Efforts

Germany confirmed it will facilitate American and Kyiv teams for preliminary consultations focusing on a potential halt in fighting, ahead of a broader summit involving EU officials and President Zelenskyy planned for Monday. During a national address, Zelenskyy affirmed the upcoming meeting with the US representative Steve Witkoff: “Most importantly, I will be holding talks with envoys of President Trump, and there will also be meetings with our allies in Europe, with many leaders, concerning the basis of a lasting peace – a diplomatic accord to stop the war,” he said.

Kremlin Conditions for a Truce

In parallel, Kremlin senior diplomat Yuri Ushakov reaffirmed that Russia would only give its blessing to a cessation of hostilities once Ukraine’s military leave territory within the Donetsk region they currently hold. Ushakov added that Russian police and interior ministry forces would stay in sections of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas even if the area were to become a DMZ under a proposed peace plan – a demand viewed as unacceptable for Ukraine.

Overnight Assaults Target Ukrainian Infrastructure

Amid a separate escalation, Russia targeted five oblasts in Ukraine overnight, concentrating on the country’s power and maritime infrastructure, according to President Zelenskyy. He said the assaults utilized over 450 unmanned aerial vehicles and 30 rockets. As the mercury near zero degrees, Ukraine’s interior minister, Ihor Klymenko, stated more than a civilians were left in the dark.

Furthermore, an strike on the port city of Odesa caused grain silos igniting, as stated by Ukrainian deputy prime minister Oleksiy Kuleba. Regional officials reported that two people were injured in attacks on the wider region.

Security and Aid Updates

Against a backdrop of increasing anxieties about the threat from Russia, Germany announced it is deploying a group of soldiers to Poland to support a initiative to fortify the country’s border with Belarus. Poland, a key ally of Ukraine, revealed plans last year to enhance a significant section of its frontier. The primary role of the German soldiers will be “engineering activities,” a defence ministry spokesperson said.

In a different incident, approximately 480 people were safely removed from a rail service running between the city in Poland of Przemysl and Kyiv following police responded to a call about a potential danger. No one was injured, and authorities provided no further details on the nature of the threat. Polish security services remain on heightened alert since several attempts to disrupt rail traffic on the route linking Warsaw to the border with Ukraine.

In other news, Ukraine’s navy alleged Russian forces of intentionally targeting a civilian ship from Turkey carrying cooking oil to Egypt with a drone on Saturday. The statement claimed the ship ‘VIVA’ was struck but able to continue its voyage, with all 11 crew members injured.

Additionally, Ukraine received 114 prisoners released by Belarus on Saturday, per the Ukrainian PoW coordination centre. The released captives are to get healthcare, and those nationals of Belarus who choose will be relocated to Poland or Lithuania.
